Keswick Floods November 2009

Keswick Launch pictured here, an area usually full of tourists awaiting their trip on Derwent Water. All boat landings are completely covered with the high flood water.

Just been evacuated from home today due to the constant rain we have been having here in Keswick.
As I am writing this new post (6pm) the rain is still coming down hard and there is talk of Thirlmere Dam being opened as well as high tides.
At the moment, all main roads are closed which lead into Keswick town. The fire brigade and emergency services are still on the go and travelling as far as Bootle to help this disaster zone out.
This has been declared a major incident and is much worse compared to the Keswick 2005 floods.

Just seen footage of Cockermouth main street totally underwater, Looks like it's just going to get worse.

  5. Hi Angela,
    Thanks very much for that,
I am sure everyone has seen the news updates.
Cockermouth has been seriously been hit also, and the RAF have had to airlift residents from their roofs.
Also the Workington police officer is still missing and was last seen by the bridge which has now collapsed.

Its hard to imagine what everyone is going through. but the cumbrians are tough & are showing they care for not only themselves but for others too. take care & be safe. Angela.

  10. Hi Simon,
The Caravan Park is one of the first things locations to go as its right by the Lake. Might be an idea for you to drop them a line.
It is pretty grim here at the moment, If you have a canoe you will have a ball.

  11. Hi Jason
I will get the canoe packed then! Will try and get through to the site, before setting off. Just didn't want to abandon Keswick if its only certain parts that are affected.
    Cheers
    Simon

  12. HI Jason

Can't believe the pictures and the volume of water, we were up 2 weeks ago and its' frightening to think that what appeared to be containable can rise so quickly, thoughts go out for the family of the police officer and all those affected. Hope things settle soon
